Sardinia
White sandy beaches and water of turquoise colour is the delight for all surfers.
You think you are in the Caribbean including one advantage: it is only 1-2 hours flight away. You can easily reach the airport in the northwest Alghero or Olbia in the northeast. Flights at low cost are available.
We limit our Surf-Fewo info to the windy north of the island. The right wind is in the street of Bonifacio. East and west winds are strongly accelerated between Corse and Sardinia. Robby Naish, who discovered this place became quickly aware of the fact that geographically seen this is the windiest spot on Sardinia. Porto Pollo has become a synonym for magnificent surf and free-ride conditions among surfers and kiters.
Sardinia has the reputation of being a bit expensive which applies to the famous Costa Smeralda (the name is telling) and the luxurious villas of the VIPs and stars. You can discover lots of natural beauties, this makes Sardinia interesting and worth visiting for non-surfing partners.
Those of you, who once were on Sardinia, will certainly come back to this dreamlike island in the Mediterranean Sea – we know this from experience…
Time for travelling
In spring, autumn and winter are the best winds on Sardinia. In the summer the island is crowded by Italians and the wind can be weaker. Days with strong winds are not often at this time of the year.
The best time for surfers is from the middle of March up to the end of June and from September till the end of November. Then you find good winds, empty beaches without limits, reasonable prices and comfortable temperatures.
Winds
The fuel for the winds and kitesurfers in the north of Sardinia is the Mistral. It starts in the south of France and reaches Sardinia in partly strong squalls - it is then accelerated again in the streets of Bonifacio. On its way from the south of France to Sardinia it leaves its impact on the Mediterranean Sea with the effect of really high waves.
Other winds on the island
From the southwest/west: Libeccio-Scirocco-Ponente
Eastcoast: Levante-Greco-Tramontana
Spots in the north of Sardinia:
Westcoast:
There are top wave spot at the west coast and Capo Mannu a bit more to the south is the best spot for waves in the Mediterranean area.
The coast is very rocky and there are a lot of spots with strong currents and with the Mistral immensely high waves.
Only for experts!
Stintino La Pelosa:
„The beauty“ in the far northwest carries its name for a good reason. Here you glide (at the best in east winds) over turquoise water through the bay which is crowded in summer…
Good conditions for a free ride.
Some wave spots
Rena Majore
Cala Pischina
Marina delle Rose
Moderate wave spot in the west and an alternative for busy times:
Vignola
In the north:
Top spot with statistically seen the best wind: Porto Pollo
East coast:
Pittulongu- conditions for free riding
Highly to be recommended:
San Teodoro La Cinta – just as good for free rides, dreamlike white beach with Caribbean flair
The experienced ones and professionals dare going to the wave spots at the north shore. Beginners and free ride freaks are better off on the spots of Vignola Stintiono or La Pelosa – Porto Pollo or La Cinta – depending on the winds.
